- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) — the harshest and most common
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — milder, still stripping
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
- Sodium Myreth Sulfate
Most supermarket shampoos in Pakistan contain one of these. The rich lather people associate with "cleaning properly" is the sulfate — and lather has nothing to do with how clean your hair actually gets.
Who actually needs to switch
- Anyone with a smoothing treatment. Non-negotiable. Sulfate strips nanoplastia and keratin out of the cuticle and can halve how long they last — see the aftercare guide.
- Coloured hair. Sulfates fade colour noticeably faster.
- Dry, frizzy or damaged hair. Stripping the natural oils makes all three worse.
- Sensitive or itchy scalp. SLS is a known irritant for some people.
If your hair is thick, oily, untreated and you have no complaints — you can carry on as you are. Sulfate-free is not a moral position, it is a fit-for-purpose one.
What to expect when you switch
Less lather. This is normal and not a sign it is not working. You may need slightly more product for the first few washes.
An adjustment period. Some people find hair feels heavier or oilier for one to two weeks while the scalp recalibrates oil production after years of being stripped. This settles.
